As more foundations become interested in tapping the potential of networks for social impact, they look for ways of understanding when and how to invest in network building. In our publication Net Gains we devoted a chapter to this topic. Since then others have also published advice to foundations, highlighting the fact that networks are messier, more unpredictable, and harder to evaluate than organizations, and asking foundations to consider their readiness for such a change in grantee practice and to be clear about their "network hypothesis," the reason they believe that network organizing has better potential than grants to organizations. At the same time, our own work with networks that are philanthropically funded has yielded additional advice.

Building an effective network for social change is not the same as building an effective organization for social change, so helping people to build a network -- being a network consultant -- is not the same as helping people build an organization. Based on our experiences working with networks, here are some capabilities a network should look for -- and expect to find -- in a network consultant.
