April 2009: Innovations We're Working On

Updates from the nuPOLIS portfolio of social innovation projects

Urban Sustainability Associates (USA) national network. With a successful organizing meeting of USA partners at the platinum LEED headquarters of the Center for Neighborhood Technology, we took a big step to launching the consulting and innovation-development network. Detroit Urban Sustainability Dialogue.  Hosted a meeting in Detroit with our partner John Heiss of the Greater Detroit Network for Social Innovators and a network of urban sustainability practitioners to explore opportunities for the City. A recent article in Time Magazine (“Detroit Tries to Get on A Road to Renewal”) lays out the challenges and opportunities of Detroit as a “low density” urban sustainability case study.

Network Evaluation.  INC’s Center for Network Impact began work on a network evaluation and learning design for the Massachusetts Interagency Council on Housing and Homelessness, which is using a network design for its new strategy to combat homelessness.

ESL Innovation. Developing innovation concept for increasing immigrant access to job-based English language skill learning. (Supported by the Western Union Foundation.)

Science and Math Education Innovations. Completed development of an "innovation portfolio" for public schools in Newaygo County in western Michigan--drawing together innovations in math & science education and adapting them to the local context. (Supported by The Fremont Area Community Foundation.)
