| | | November 07, 2008 | | Helping develop and spread large-scale innovations that advance the sustainability of urban centers and regions. | Comprehensive sustainability strategies are increasingly being used by urban centers and regions to achieve the multiple benefits of reduced climate impact; cost savings through improved energy and resource efficiency; economic prosperity through participation in the low-carbon economy; and improved quality of life. Cities offer solutions to climate change through their higher levels of population density and lower per capita greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
In partnership with the Center for Neighborhood Technology in Chicago, INC is building a national network of partners capable of supporting large-scale urban sustainability solutions. The mission of this network (Urban Sustainability Associates – USA) is to support urban regions in implementing large-scale urban sustainability solutions that simultaneously reduce GHG production, support economic competitiveness and growth, and advance social equity. Our vision is that radically improved environmental performance of urban regions can drive inclusive prosperity.
We are currently focused on these project areas: |
 | | Sustainability Planning | | A process for communities setting up comprehensive approaches to sustainability, based on the ground-breaking work of the Chicago Climate Action Plan. | | item/219667 |
 | | Building Energy Retrofitting | | Buildings are the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in most communities. Retrofitting is a relatively low cost way to reduce emissions and energy costs, and many urban regions are designing aggressive retrofitting strategies. | | item/219668 |
 | | Building Energy Efficiency Finance Fund | | Concept development of fund built to support large-scale energy retrofitting in pursuit of sustainable energy generation, developed for Housing and Urban Development transition team. | | item/228683 |
 | | Transit Innovations | | Transportation is the fastest growing source of greenhouse gas emissions in the US--but communities that provide a wide variety of affordable and convenient transportation choices can significantly reduce carbon-intensive travel. | | item/219671 |
 | | Sustainable Economic Development | | Communities are discovering new ways to create jobs and businesses, while improving environmental performance. | | item/219672 |
 | | Community Energy Planning | | Many communities are applying the skills of regional planning to their systems for efficient generation, distribution and consumption of energy in order to improve the environment, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and control energy costs. | | item/219673 |
