| | | | Designing and implementing public schools that successfully keep low-income students in school and prepare them for college. | In most communities, the majority of low-income, minority and immigrant children drop out of school and many of those that do graduate from high school are typically not academically ready for college. But innovative schools around the country are helping these students beat the odds and get to college--by redesigning the entire school so that it engages kids in developing their identities and skills as college-bound learners.
Our work started in Detroit, where in 2000 we helped to found University Preparatory Academy, now a K-12 public school district with 1,600 students. In a survey of innovations in urban education, we identified key design principles for a school of "urban learners" and then implemented them. In 2008 we helped to start a second school district in Detroit--a 6-12th grade science and math school.
Our research into and experiences with the challenges of education for low-income students have led us to develop several pioneering projects for "high-poverty, high-performance" schools: | | |
