Transnational Immigration

Research and innovations developed by Alvaro Lima, Director of Research for the City of Boston, focusing on the growing number of immigrants in the US who live and work transnationally--here and back in their home countries.
Gone are the days when people leave one country for another, and sever ties with "home." Today, while people may physically be in a new country, the Internet, TV, phone and air travel allow them to "live" in two places at once, creating new social, economic, and political dynamics in both nations.  They form transnational immigrant communities--here and there--that present needs and opportunities quite different from those of previous immigrant generations.

Alvaro Lima's ground-breaking survey of the transnational immigrant phenomenon frames the issues and opportunities. Partnering with Lima, we are developing new ways to measure and analyze the transnational immigration phenomenon and innovations to serve transnational populations.
